Appeal Court Judgement: Group refutes report of protest in Jos

A group operating under the umbrella body of Plateau APC Youths for Good Governance has refuted reports of mass protests in Jos or any part of the state following the declaration of Dr Nentawe Yilwatda as the winner of the March 18th, 2023, governorship election by the Court of Appeal.

In a statement provided to reporters in Jos, the group led by Hon. Murphy Lazarus Gobus clarified that what occurred in the state was, in fact, massive celebrations.

The statement read, “As a group, we want to state loudly and clearly that there is no report of any protest that took place in the state capital or any other community; rather, there were celebrations in almost all 17 local government councils of the state.

“The people of Plateau are in agreement with the Court of Appeal’s judgement declaring Dr Nentawe Yilwatda as the governor-elect of the state.

“Instead of protests, celebrations erupted in numerous local government councils of the state following the victory of All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda at the Court of Appeal.

“Residents of the city came out in large numbers onto the streets to jubilantly celebrate the court judgement, holding Dr. Nentawe’s posters.”

The group added, “The report of any protest in Jos following the declaration of Dr Nentawe is false and the handiwork of mischief-makers.

“As of now, celebrations are ongoing in almost all the 17 local government councils of the state following the APC’s victory at the Court of Appeal.

“The celebrations are ongoing in Jos metropolis as well as numerous communities across the 17 local government councils of the state.”

They further emphasised the people’s confidence in Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, believing that he would bring significant development to the state.

“Our Governor-elect, Dr. Nentawe, is a unifying figure who will inclusively lead all tribes while fulfilling his duties.

“We urge citizens to disregard this false news, as our dear state of Plateau remains peaceful and anticipates Dr Nentawe’s swearing-in as governor of the state.”

The group added that they called on their members to continue celebrating the victory with utmost modesty and decorum.

“APC is a peaceful party, and we urge our members to abide by the law as we celebrate this victory.

“We appeal to members of the APC in Plateau State to maintain calm and refrain from any provocative acts that could disturb the peace and tranquilly of our beloved state.”

It should be noted that the Appeal Court in Abuja, in a unanimous judgement on Sunday, nullified the election of the Governor of Plateau State, Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, mainly due to the PDP’s lack of structure and non-adherence to court orders.
