Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressed sympathy for Nigerian workers, stating that they are grappling with government policies detrimental to their welfare. In his message for International Workers Day, Atiku highlighted the dire situation faced by Nigerian workers, contrasting it with the worldwide celebrations.
Atiku lamented the government’s failure to fulfil promises of wage increments, leaving Nigerian workers enduring hardship and harsh living conditions. He criticized the government’s handling of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), noting the frustration faced by Nigerians due to long queues at petrol stations despite the purported removal of the subsidy.
The former Vice President condemned the unilateral decision to remove the subsidy without consulting Nigerian workers’ representatives, accusing the government of incompetence. He also criticized the continuous increase in tariffs without addressing corruption and inefficiencies in the system, which he argued unfairly burdens Nigerian citizens.
Atiku praised Nigerian workers’ historical role in fighting tyranny and bad governance, noting a departure from past administrations’ treatment of workers’ rights. He criticized the current administration for subjecting workers to uncertainty amidst soaring prices of essential goods.
Atiku expressed sympathy for Nigerian workers and congratulated them on Workers Day. He hoped that this year’s theme, “Ensuring Safety and Health at Work in a Changing Climate,” would prompt the Nigerian government to prioritize workers’ concerns.
