The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed deep concern over the escalating shortages of food, water, shelter, and other basic necessities following the devastating flood in Maiduguri.
In a statement signed and made available to the Nigerian Tribune in Maiduguri on Thursday, CAN Chairman, Most Rev. Dr. John Bogna Bakeni, described the situation as “deeply devastating” and urged the federal and state governments, non-governmental organizations, and well-meaning Nigerians to provide immediate assistance to those affected.

According to Dr. Bakeni, the flood, which began on September 8, had a catastrophic impact on the city and its environs, destroying numerous homes and businesses.
He further explained that the situation was compounded by the fact that it occurred just a week after a similar disaster in Chibok Local Government Area.
CAN appealed to individuals to show compassion and kindness to those in need by sharing their resources with the hungry, homeless, and sick.
The situation in Maiduguri remains dire, with many struggling to survive. CAN prayed for God’s intervention and for wisdom to guide the people of Borno State through this challenging time.
“We were deeply devastated by this flood and its impact on our people.
“We urge all relevant authorities to act swiftly to address the humanitarian needs of the victims.”
The flood has raised concerns about the ability of federal and state governments to respond to natural disasters, prompting CAN to call for a thorough investigation into the cause of the flood and measures to prevent such disasters in the future.
