Cross River federal lawmakers receive pass mark from reviewers

Reviewers, including academics and social activists, have said that lawmakers from Cross River State have not performed badly in the past year.

Led by the current president of the University of Cross River State Alumni Association, Dr Peter Iyali, the panellists reviewed scorecards for five out of the 11 lawmakers in the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Iyali said: “Upon concluding our review, we are pleased to acknowledge that the current National Assembly members from the state have demonstrated good performances over the past year.”

They, however, named Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, representing Cross River’s southern senatorial district, as performing much better based on legislation, project execution, and empowerment initiatives, while Senator Jarigbe Agom came up closely.

Iyali noted that there is a healthy competitive spirit amongst them to excel more.

In the House of Representatives, Peter Akpanke, representing the Obudu/Bekwerra/Obanliku federal constituency, emerged third in their ratings.

The statement added that the evaluation exercise of the impacts of national lawmakers from the state will be held annually.

He stated that: “We didn’t want to speculate and wanted to give all the National Assembly members the opportunity to tell us what they’ve done in the past one year. We contacted each of them, asking for their scorecards. Six out of the eleven submitted to us, while five did not. We used some of our people to verify the claims they made and analyse what the five who could not submit shared on their social media accounts directly or through their aides.”
