Emir of Minna inaugurates committee to tackle thuggery, substance abuse

The Emir of Minna, Alhaji Umaru Faruq Bahago has inaugurated a 31-man committee on anti-thuggery and substance abuse to tackle persistent thuggery, youth restiveness and consumption of hard drugs by youths in Minna and its environs.

Inaugurating the committee, the Emir charged them to live up to expectations and to work in accordance with the laid down rules and regulations, also to work hand in hand with law enforcement agencies in Minna emirate to achieve the set target.

The monarch assured the committee members of his maximum cooperation and support at all times and urged them not to spare any person who would want to breach the peaceful coexistence already established in the Emirate.

The State Commissioner of Justice, and Attorney General of the State, Barr. Nasiru Mohammed Mua’zu in his remarks during the inauguration, tasked members of the committee to ensure that thuggery in the Minna emirate is brought to an end henceforth.

Mua’zu said youth restiveness and thuggery in Minna emirate which has recently become the order of the day have no place in the emirate hence the inauguration of the committee to tackle the menace.

He advised that any person caught in the act /arrested be arraigned before the Court within 24 hours and called on the law enforcement agents who would arraign the suspects in court to follow due process and in accordance with the panel code of law.

According to him any person found in possession of dangerous weapons, conflicting fears in innocent and Law abiding citizens and breaching the peace should be arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law.

He advised that the committee members should ensure that they follow up cases to their conclusion, adding that there are two courts in the High Court complex designated to handle cases of Anti thuggery and substance abuse that will hasten the delivery of justice and advised Police to approach the court if need be.

Earlier in his speech, the Special Adviser on Political Matters to the Governor of Niger state and Jawon Minna, Hon. Nma Kolo Mohammed said since the composition of the Committee about two weeks ago Minna and its environs have witnessed relative peace.

The Jawon Minna, thereby appealed to ward heads in the emirate to live up to expectations in their domains by checking the inflow of strangers, stressing that, “I urge you to always know the people coming to settle in your various places, their businesses and where they are coming from to avoid accommodating bad elements into our communities.”

The committee has Alhaji Umar Sanda as Chairman, Minna Emirate anti- thuggery and substance abuse committee and 30 others as members who are saddled with the responsibility to look into both the remote and immediate causes of thuggery and find a possible lasting solution to the menace particularly youth restiveness in Minna and its environs.
