Emirate tussle: Falana faults recent Court orders in Kano

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has criticised the recent court orders regarding the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, saying the rulings are confusing and legally flawed.

He said this during an interview with Arise TV shared on Friday, June 21.

Falana argued that the court’s decision to nullify Sanusi’s reinstatement as Emir is contradictory, as the same court acknowledged that the repeal law empowers the state governor to reinstate Sanusi.

He pointed out that Sanusi was not accused of disobeying any court order and that the court’s decision was based on a flawed assumption that the parties were aware of the order due to social media reports.

“What the court did say is that the order made by him, on the 24th of May, which according to him was served on the 1st and 4th defendant, i.e. the governor and the attorney general on the 27th of May, they were deemed to have had knowledge of the order because the order was reported on social media.

“Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was not said to have disobeyed any order, so if the order affected them, it ought to have been put on notice.

“But what the court is saying, ‘I cannot declare invalid the repeal law made by the House of Assembly’, and that repeal law empowers the governor to reinstate Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

“So the order is a bit confusing,” he opined.
