ICONS: Evangelist Ebenezer Obey-Fabiyi (Chief Commander)

  • Born on Friday, 3 April, 1942 at Mercy Street Hospital, Lagos State and grew up at Idogo town, Ogun State. Obey is of the Egba-Yoruba ethnic background. He is of the Owu subgroup of the Egba in Abeokuta.

    • He began his professional career in the mid-1950s after moving to Lagos. After his tutelage with Fatai Rolling-Dollar’s band, he formed a band called ‘The International Brothers’ in 1964, playing highlife–jùjú fusion. Soon they had a hit juju single “Ewa Wowun Ojumi Ri.” The band later metamorphosed into ‘Inter-Reformers’ in the early-1970s.
    • Obey, however, is also renowned for Christian spiritual themes in his music and has since the early-1990s retired into Nigerian gospel music ministry.
    • He has also become a force to reckon with since he gave his life to Christ. He is the General Overseer of the Decross Gospel Mission, an arm of Ebenezer Obey Evangelical Ministry, which has grown in leaps and bounds.
    • Today, 3 April, 2024, the renowned miliki highlife juju crooner, Evangelist (Professor) Ebenezer Remilekun Aremu Olasupo Obey-Fabiyi clocks 82.
