Kano govt blames building collapse on negligence

The Managing Director of the Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA), Alhaji Ibrahim Yakub Adamu, has described the recent unfortunate building collapse in the state as an act of negligence.

However, he stated that KNUPDA had earlier served them with first and second notices to stop before the building collapsed.

He then warned that anybody found contravening the KNUPDA law would not go scot-free.

Adamu gave the warning in view of the proliferation of property development without compliance with the relevant sections of the KNUPDA law.

He unveiled the daily exercise to be conducted by a high-powered KNUPDA task force committee to ascertain building approvals towards minimising the risk of building collapse in the state. He then extended his condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the quick recovery of those hospitalised.

He, therefore, urged the general public who are about to commence any building to first secure a building permit from KNUPDA before embarking on property development.

Adamu, however, disclosed that since the inception of the administration of Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, KNUPDA has simplified the process of acquiring a building permit in the state.

According to him, recently, a one-stop unit was established to promptly issue building permits to the public, unlike before, when it used to take months to complete the process.

He further stated that those applying for building permits should also submit drawings and designs for better assessment before developing any structure to curb building collapse in the future.

He enumerated the series of measures taken by KNUPDA to ensure full compliance by the public.

Adamu also disclosed that meetings were held in collaboration with security agencies to find out about the developer and bring him to book.
