The Lagos Water Corporation (LWC) has announced the payment of compensation and other benefits to all its members of staff recently disengaged from service.
The managing director of the corporation, Mukhtaar Temitope Tijani, made the announcement on Friday in a statement made available to Saturday Tribune by the head of the public relations unit of the corporation, Mrs Kehinde Fashola.
According to the managing director, the payment of the severance total package, which covered three months’ salaries in lieu of notice and two months’ severance compensation, is not only based on showing empathy to the disengaged workers but also on the fulfilment of the state’s government commitment to abide by the public service rules of engagement with its employees.
He reiterated that the ongoing restructuring of the corporation to make it more functional and effective necessitated government action, asking all the affected workers not to see it as a witch-hunting exercise but rather as a universal practice aimed at enhancing service delivery and addressing identified gaps.
“So, we want everyone affected and members of the public to view the action as an initiative to stimulate growth, create new opportunities, foster fresh perspectives, and drive the corporation towards achieving its mandates,” he stressed.
Tijani, however, commended the state government and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in particular for the prompt payment of the entitlement.
He said it’s hoped that the payment, which had been made before Wednesday, May 8, would certainly alleviate the negative impact of the current economic hardship in the country on the affected workers and their families, wishing them well in their future endeavours.
The workers totaling 391 were disengaged by the corporation on April 15, 2024, because of the already stated reasons and with a promise to give them all their entitlements as government workers.
The affected workers, on their part, were not happy about their disengagement, and because of that, they staged a street protest against the action.
