Mauritania President Ghazouani wins re-election

President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani of Mauritania has been re-elected.

Ghazouani coasted to victory in the country’s presidential election that featured six other contenders.

He got 56.12 per cent of votes cast to beat his closest rival, Biram Dah Abeid, who won 22.10 per cent, according to the country’s Independent National Electoral Commission, CENI, which announced the final results on Monday.

Ghazouani’s other main rival, Hamadi Ould Sid’ El Moctar, came third with 12.78 per cent, but he had earlier on Sunday rejected the results, claiming irregularities during the election.

The allegation had since been dismissed by CENI which insists that the process was faultless.

The electoral body disclosed that the turnout of voters was 54 per cent of the nearly two million eligible voters.

It is now left to the country’s constitutional court to review the results of the election and announce the final outcome.
