My life as a dancer turned musician —Victony

Nigerian musician Victony has opened up about his journey to stardom and the inspirations behind his newly released debut album, “Stubborn.” The album, which dropped on June 21, 2024, follows the success of his 2023 hit single “Soweto,” featuring Don Toliver and Rema.

Speaking in a recent interview with Apple Music Africa Now Radio, Victony shared various experiences that shaped his artistic career.

He revealed that before he became a musician, he explored other creative outlets, including dancing and acting.

“Even outside music, I just love to try out different things,” he said.

“At some point, I was in a dance group. At some point, I tried acting. Even with some of the teasers I put out, I do acting here and there.” These early ventures into different art forms played a significant role in his development as an artist.

Reflecting on the creation of “Stubborn,” Victony explained that the album was deeply personal and inspired by his journey to success.

“Looking back at everything I’ve been through – my come-up story and how I’ve defied the odds. I’ve stayed true to myself and kept my eyes on the goal all along,” he shared.

This sense of perseverance and authenticity is a recurring theme throughout the album.

The album “Stubborn” features collaborations with prominent artists, adding a rich diversity to its sound. Victony teamed up with era-defining Afrobeats star Asake and street-hop sensation Shallipopi. These collaborations not only highlight Victony’s versatility but also his ability to blend different musical styles seamlessly.

One of the standout moments for Victony during the making of “Stubborn” was fulfilling his dream of working with Guyanese-American star SAINt JHN.

“SAINt JHN is in my top five artists of all time. He’s someone I really look up to, so you can imagine how much that session meant to me,” Victony expressed. “Being in the same room as SAINt JHN and watching him create, learning from him. That was a very interesting record.”

Victony’s passion for experimenting with different genres and incorporating various elements into his music is evident in “Stubborn.” He explained, “I try to incorporate that in my music as well, so I listen to all kinds of music. Fuse elements from different genres and try to make something beautiful.”

Victony emphasised the importance of staying true to oneself and remaining focused on one’s goals. His journey, marked by resilience and dedication, serves as an inspiration to many aspiring artists. “Nothing else has been influenced by decisions,” he stated, underscoring his commitment to authenticity in his music and career.

Victony’s rise to fame has been a remarkable journey, marked by significant achievements and collaborations. His hit single “Soweto” brought him international acclaim, paving the way for his debut album. “Stubborn” not only showcases his growth as an artist but also highlights his ability to overcome challenges and stay true to his artistic vision.
