Nasarawa indigenes protest designation as militia group

The Bassa ethnic group in Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene and facilitate the immediate return of over 200,000 displaced community members to their homes.

The group made this plea during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, where they also protested their recent designation as a militia group by the Nasarawa State Government.

Mr Mark Jere, Vice Chairman of the Bassa Cultural and Development Union, Nasarawa State chapter, spoke on behalf of the community, calling for the reconstruction of destroyed Bassa homes in both Toto and Nasarawa Local Government Areas, which were damaged in 2018.

He also demanded adequate compensation and the release of relief materials to the displaced Bassa people.

Jere further urged the state government to disband vigilante groups in Toto Local Government Area and ensure the inclusion of Bassa people in employment and governance as they return home.
