Professor Wushishi underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive national examination law to regulate examinations across Nigeria effectively
He points out the vulnerability of the current system due to the absence of such a law, leading to various challenges
Professor Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi, the Registrar/Chief Executive of the National Examinations Council (NECO), emphasized the critical necessity for a comprehensive national examination law to regulate all aspects of examinations across Nigeria. During a one-day retreat organized by NECO in Abuja on Monday, he made this assertion, themed ‘Legislative Functions: The Imperatives of Achieving NECO’s Mandate and the Challenges of Examination Legislation in Nigeria.
Wushishi highlighted the absence of such a law, stating that reliance on a patchwork of regulations across examination bodies and individual schools leaves the system vulnerable to various challenges.
Among the challenges identified by Wushishi are infrastructure constraints, a surge in candidate enrollment, inadequate funding, and examination malpractice.
Chairing the occasion, Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State emphasized the importance of reviewing existing laws governing NECO’s examinations to address emerging issues such as artificial intelligence.
The Minister of State for Education, Sununu Tanko, represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Didi Esther Walson-Jack, encouraged active participation from attendees, stressing the importance of robust discussions to enable NECO to fulfil its mandate effectively.
