New York-based Pfizer, Kano discuss development of world-class research centre


The center aims to advance disease research and control, as well as enhance laboratory capabilities in Nigeria and West Africa

On Tuesday, Pfizer Inc. and the Kano State Government held their annual meeting to discuss the progress of the International Independent Research Trust and its efforts to establish a world-class research center.
The Kano State government has provided land for the center, while Pfizer has provided funding for its establishment in Dawakin Kudu, Kano.
The center aims to advance disease research and control, as well as enhance laboratory capabilities in Nigeria and West Africa.
Since its inception four years ago, the Trust has made significant strides in research volume and quality.
During the visit, a delegation led by Pfizer’s Sub-Sahara Africa Cluster Lead, Rhulani Nhlaniki, paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, and met with the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Abdullahi Bappa Bichi, who represented Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Chief Anthony Idigbe, SAN, Pfizer’s legal counsel and delegation member, briefed the governor’s representative on their meeting.
Following the meeting between donors and the board of directors, Pfizer and the Kano State government issued a joint statement on the research center’s ongoing development and long-term sustainability.
