NFF Reveals Reason Finidi George Was Named Super Eagles Coach

NFF highlights Finidi George’s extensive experience with Super Eagles as crucial in his appointment as head coach
Director of Communications at NFF praises Finidi’s achievements with Enyimba FC, citing league title win and ongoing success

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has clarified the appointment of Finidi George as the new coach of the Super Eagles, citing his extensive experience with the team as a pivotal factor.
Following his stint leading Nigeria in two international friendlies in March, Finidi was chosen to succeed Jose Peseiro, who stepped down as head coach of the Super Eagles after the AFCON finals earlier this year.
Ademola Olajire, the Director of Communications at NFF, highlighted the former Ajax winger’s standout qualities, emphasizing his tenure as an assistant coach under Portuguese manager Jose Peseiro.
“I’m not part of the Technical Committee, but there are numerous positives surrounding Finidi George,” stated Olajire in a YouTube video shared by Hotsports.
“Finidi George, besides being a remarkable football player, has meticulously prepared himself and enhanced his credentials with the achievements he has garnered in his relatively short coaching career.
“Regarding the Super Eagles, he spent twenty months as an assistant under Jose Peseiro, which provided him with a significant advantage over other candidates. He closely collaborated with the team, accompanying them through the AFCON qualification and securing a second-place finish in the tournament.
“Given his stature, accomplishments, and close association with the team, it’s only natural that he receives the nod, especially with only five weeks remaining before crucial matches,” Olajire added.
Furthermore, Olajire commended Finidi’s decision to return to Nigeria and kickstart his coaching journey with Enyimba FC, the Aba Elephants.
“Despite having the option to stay in Spain and accept a position with a second-tier club, Finidi opted to return to Nigeria and begin his coaching career with an NPFL club.
“He joined Enyimba and clinched the league title in his second season, a remarkable achievement. Winning the league title is no small feat, and as we see now, in his third season with the team and four matches left, he’s on course to defend the title.

“This speaks volumes about his competence and expertise,” concluded Olajire.
With high expectations, Finidi must lead the Super Eagles to success in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa.
