Nigeria making appropriate investments in education sector — NUC secretary

The Acting Executive Secretary National Universities Commission (NUC), Chris Jibril Maiyaki has said that Nigeria has a total number of 272 existing Universities, comprising 62 Federal, 63 State, and 148 private Universities, pointing out that the fact that there are more private Universities is a pointer to the appropriate investments that Nigeria has always yearned for.

Maiyaki stated further that what it means is that with the advent of private providers of university education in Nigeria, the challenges of access is gradually and successfully being tackled. stressing that despite the large numbers of these Universities in Nigeria it was yet inadequate to accommodate over two million students seeking admission on yearly basis.

He stated this at the Maiden Matriculation and endowment ceremonies of El- Amin University Minna, Niger State held at the University’s Auditorium on Tuesday, 16th April 2024.

No fewer than about 48 matriculating students from the faculties of Law, Natural and Applied Sciences, Management, and Social Sciences were administered the Oath of Allegiance of El-Amin University Minna.

The Acting Executive Secretary NUC, thereby informed the matriculating students, that education is the bedrock of any society, saying, “As such, anyone seeking the best must be resilience”.

According to him, “I appreciated the former First Lady and Founder of El-Amin International Schools, Dr.Maryam Babangida, for her foresight, legacies and dreams for the University. I also urge the students to adhere to the University’s standards”.

He said, “On behalf of the Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC), the Nigerian University System ( NUS) I bring warm felicitations to the Proprietor, Board of Trustees, Chairman, Governing Council, Vice-Chancellor, and other principal Officers, Staff, and Students of El-Amin University”.

He also singled out former Military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida for commendation, describing him as the Patron Emeritus of El-Amin University and adding that the former Nigerian leader dared to dream in the first place

” I extend my heartfelt commendation to you and your highly respected team. Your diligent efforts have led to the meticulous fulfillment of NUC’s stipulated Eleven eligibility criteria and fourteen-step procedure for the establishment of a Private University in Nigeria”.

Chris J. Maiyaki pointed out that General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida’s tenacity of purpose has resulted in the granting of provisional license to El-Amin University, adding that despite the rigoour of the process, overcoming the challenges of granting provisional license always brings joy and immense fulfillment which is certainly worthy of celebrations.

In separate remarks the Pro- Pro-Chancellor of the University, Dr. Mohammed Babangida, assured that the University will continue to produce excellent graduates, urging stakeholders including parents to prioritise quality education for their children.

‘I congratulate the first Matriculants of our great University, I advise you not to relent in your pursuits for excellence in your career at this our university,’ on our part as the Management and staff of the University promise to make your learning at El-Amin University memorable’, Mohammed Babangida, declared.

Similarly, in their remarks, Hon. Justice Musa Dattijo Muhammad, and the Pro-Chancellor Abdulkadir Kure University of Education Minna, Prof. Mohammed Kuta Yahaya enjoined the students to work hard to make the University the most sought-after in Nigeria and beyond, as well as making their parents and guardians proud of them.

Meanwhile, the Matriculation Oath of allegiance to the El-Amin University, Minna on the 48 Matriculating students from the faculties of Applied and Natural Sciences, Law, Management, and Social Sciences was administered to them by the University’s Registrar, Mrs. V. N. Kolo at the university’s auditorium.
