President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajearo, has stressed the need for government to take adequate care of the welfare of aviation workers even as he described the sector as a catalyst that drives the economy of the country.
Speaking at the 2nd National Delegates conference of the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP) in Kano, Comrade Ajaero, who was represented by the Deputy National President, Comrade Kabir Ado Sani said, enhanced welfare package for workers will improve service delivery for efficient and effective aviation sector.
According to Ajaero, the industry will not function effectively if the workers there are not taken seriously.
While paying glowing tribute to the founding fathers of labour in the country, Ajearo noted that the unions were leveraging on the solid foundation, which was responsible for today›s achievements.
He urged the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP) to continue to defend the workers in the aviation sector as the impact of the aviation industry on the economy was very illuminating as it continues to provide jobs for many people, airlines and investors
His words: “Unions cannot fight effectively to win if they are not strong, for unions to be strong, they need to organise their members in work places.”
Ajearo commended ANAP for getting the union registered and urged them to do more by embarking on membership drive to make them stronger. He then affirmed support of the NLC in their struggle.
Speaking as the Chairman of the occasion, former managing director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Captain Rabiu Yadudu, described aviation unions in the country as being objective and sincere in the pursuit of their welfare.
Yadudu while recalling how the unions stood by him throughout the pandemic era especially when workers were paid half salaries, he however cautioned that no management should take issue of workers› welfare for granted as they remained partners in progress for the development of any organisation.
Meantime, ANAP has elected its new president in the person of Mr Adedayo Alale who promised to leverage on the achievements of the immediate predecessor, Comrade Kabir Gusau.
Alale, who spoke to journalists after he was sworn in, said he will carry every member along for the overall development of the union by following the objectives of ANAP
He equally pledged that during his tenure, the union will strive to give members better condition of service by ensuring that anything welfare meant for workers were released by management.
