OFFCUT: Teaching tops list of relevant professions most underpaid

Despite being one of the most relevant professions, teachers continue to be among the most underpaid workers, according to Nigerians.

Netizens, reacting to a post by Tribune Online across all social media platforms, emphasized teaching as a profession that holds significant relevance in society but is unfortunately often undervalued in terms of compensation.

They added that most teachers play a pivotal role in shaping the minds and futures of the next generation but often find themselves facing financial challenges due to inadequate compensation.

A Facebook user @Oke Ceasefire Adebayo mentioned that teachers particularly in private schools are usually given meager salaries not enough to cater for their weekly needs.

In his words, “Teaching. Particularly teaching in private schools. They pay teachers what can never sustain them for a week as a salary.”

Another user, @OluwaFemi J. Olagunju, shared the observation that teachers and lecturers are often undervalued in terms of compensation. He pointed out particularly that the students they educate frequently go on to earn higher salaries than their instructors.

He said, “Teachers and lecturers. The people they train often go ahead and get jobs that can pay twice their salary if not thrice after graduation.”

“Primary & secondary school teachers, particularly in private. Teachers are being treated as if they don’t know the value of money. Without teachers, no way for someone such as doctors, engineer, lawyers, lawmakers etc to become what they are,” @Sola Olatunji reacted.

Oseiwe Andrew added, “When I see people who say nurses and journalists are underpaid, I see them as bunch of greedy and glutinous people. What then will teachers say? Teachers across all sections are underpaid.”

Other Nigerians on X (formerly known as Twitter) also voiced agreement with the idea that teachers play a crucial role in society, yet they often receive insufficient pay for their essential contributions.
