Over 3000 suspects arrested, prosecuted in one year – Kano CP

The Commissioner of Police in Kano State, Usaini Gumel, has said that over 3,000 criminals have been arrested and prosecuted for various offences within the past year.

He said this while highlighting the achievements of the State Police Command during his one-year tenure.

Speaking at an interactive session with journalists, Mr. Gumel stated that the command, under his leadership, has made significant strides in combating crime.

These arrests, according to him, encompassed cases of kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery, human trafficking, illicit drug dealing, and thuggery.

Mr. Gumel revealed that the command has engaged in rehabilitation efforts, with a total of 623 repentant thugs being profiled and integrated into various life-changing empowerment programs facilitated by the State Government.

Furthermore, the Commissioner highlighted the successful efforts of the command in clearing out criminal elements from the historic Dala Hill.

Overall, Mr. Gumel expressed his commitment to maintaining law and order in Kano State and ensuring the safety and security of its residents.

Other heinous crimes include kidnapping, the threat of infiltration of bandits along border LGAs, especially Falgore and Danshoshiya forests, buying and selling of minors, motor vehicle theft, cross-border organized crimes, and illicit drug dealings, among others.

He therefore stated that by so doing, the criminals had not only attempted to destroy a major symbol of Kano’s history – Dala Hill, but almost destroyed a world-class tourist attraction, a source of wealth creation, and revenue generation in the state.

Because of this intervention of the Police Command has made the historic site safe and secure for all residents of the area, visitors, and the people of Kano State,” he said.

Mr. Gumel recalled that under the Inspector General of Police Safe Schools Initiative aimed at improving the security of lives and property, especially the safety of schools and students, Gumel said, the command launched the School Protection Squad (SPS) to provide adequate security extended to all schools across the State, especially along borders with other states.

The State Police boss, then said that the SPS, comprised of sixty (60) personnel, was provided with the tools for the task and dispatched to intensify and establish robust patrols around all primary and secondary schools, and tertiary institutions across each senatorial district in the state,” he said.

“All thanks and glory are due to Allah (SWT) for granting me the opportunity to stand before you today in commemoration of my first anniversary since assuming office on 2nd May 2024 as the Command’s Commissioner of Police, to reflect on our success story and challenges.

“I must confess that it has been a privileged opportunity given to me by the Inspector General of Police, through which I am serving the community with enormous cooperation from the good people of the State, towards ensuring the safety and security of all residents.

“As the 45th Commissioner of Police of the Command, communities in the State have had their fair share of security challenges, especially the menace of daylight and night-time mobile phone armed robbery, thuggery (Daba), farmers and herders clashes, and other violent criminal activities.

“In compliance with the directive and vision of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, to all Police Commands and Formations to implement various problem-solving initiatives such as the Community Policing approach to tackle emerging community crimes, the Police Command in Kano took the bull by the horn.

“After reviewing the crime pattern and conducting crime mapping of the State, we drew up an action plan centred around robust community policing engagements with relevant stakeholders, synergizing with the military and other security agencies, and using both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches.
