PDP sweeps Oyo LG elections

The results of Saturday’s local government election held in Oyo State were announced on Sunday, with candidates of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) declared winners of all 33 chairmanship seats and councilorship positions.

Chairman of the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC), Mr Isiaka Olagunju, declared the PDP candidates winners after the returning officers for the various local government areas reeled out the votes amassed by the various parties.

The announcement at the OYSIEC state headquarters marked the end of collation processes from polling unit to ward to local government before the state level.

Olagunju declared the PDP candidates winners after polling the majority of voters for all the contested positions.

A total of 19 political parties fielded candidates for various positions across the 33 local government areas.

The announcement of the results comes despite allegations by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and some other opposition parties of disenfranchisement of voters, failure of electoral officers to turn up at polling units, inadequate materials, and intimidation of voters.

Saturday’s election was particularly characterised by low voter turnout, the late arrival of electoral officials, and the absence of electoral officials at some polling units.

Some of the PDP chairmanship candidates declared winners are: Kehinde Akande (Ibadan South West); Akeem Olatunji (Oluyole); Sikiru Sanda (Egbeda); Olusola Oluokun (Oyo East); Oyedokun Oyeniyi (Ogbomoso South); Adeleke Olusola (Ibarapa Central); Akinola Olaleye (Saki West); Kazeem Olayanju (Olorunsogo); Kazeem Arogundade (Ibarapa East); and Aikomo Olufemi (Afijio).
