Police arrest 25-year-old suspect with pistol in Niger

A 25-year-old Kelechi Unaka of Pape, Abuja, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has been arrested in Niger State by operatives of the State Police Command attached to the ‘A’ Division in Suleja Local Government Area of the State.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, stated this in a press statement issued and made available to journalists on Monday in Minna.

The statement added that, “On 04/05/2024 at about 1330hrs, a police patrol team attached to ‘A’ Division Suleja intercepted two persons on a motorcycle at Suleja junction heading to Kaduna road. On sighting the patrol team, the motorcycle rider zoomed off in an attempt to escape, after which they were pursued by the police patrol team.”

The spokesperson of the State Police Command stated further that, “Consequently, one of the suspects named Kelechi Unanka, 25 years old, of Pape, Abuja, was arrested with a bag containing one Beretta pistol with an empty magazine, while the second suspect named Victor (a.k.a. Pastor) escaped arrest by the police.”

According to the statement, during interrogation, Kelechi allegedly claimed that he received the pistol from someone whose name he could not remember.

SP Wasiu Abiodun, however, assured that the suspect would soon be transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID) Minna for further investigation and prosecution in court upon completion of the police investigation of the case.
