Following the security challenges in the nation’s capital, Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Police Command has ordered a clampdown on vehicles without plate numbers.
A statement issued by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the FCT Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh, noted with regret the manner with which motorists drive around the territory with single or no number plates and car dealers beyond the stipulated time, which is 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
He said the development was contrary to Section 25 (5) of the Federal Capital Territory Road Transport Regulation Act, 2005.
“It is no news that several recorded cases of armed robbery, popularly known as “one chance,” are mostly associated with vehicles with single or no number plates. This unlawful act has pricked the attention of the populace, who have now begun to question the effectiveness of the police in addressing the menace,” the statement further explained.
The FCT Police Commissioner has, therefore, given a marching order to his men to ensure that vehicles plying the roads with single or no number plate be impounded, the driver arrested and prosecuted.
He warned car dealers against parking their vehicles in unauthorised parking lots, warning vehicles without plates that driving beyond the stipulated time, which is six o’clock pm, will attract the full wrath of the law.
