Reps reel out plans for national policy on population, growth

The House of Representatives has unveiled plans to work with relevant stakeholders in the bid to ensure the successful conduct of the forthcoming population and housing census across the country.

Chairman, House Committee on Population, Hon. Okunjimi Odimayo, who gave the assurance in Abuja during the inauguration of the Committee, reiterated the Committee’s resolve towards the formulation of comprehensive and effective national policy on the control of the nation’s population growth.

As we all know, the Federal Government of Nigeria, Nigerians, and the whole world are looking up to this Committee to deliver maximally on the forthcoming census. The Committee will therefore earnestly engage relevant stakeholders to ensure the effective conduct of the census.

According to him, the jurisdiction of the Committee as enshrined by the House Standing Orders includes: formulating a comprehensive and effective national policy on the control of the nation’s population growth; a comprehensive and effective national policy on the nation’s population statistics and demographic data; and developing the strategies for the implementation of the aforesaid policies, including their financing from local and foreign sources.

The Committee is also poised to oversight National Population Commission and Agencies set up by the Federal Government for the purpose of population activities; monitoring and periodically reporting on judgments of Tribunals on the 2006 National Population Census to guide the House on review of legislation for future population activities; studying and periodically advising the House on the 2006 Population Census with a view to planning in advances to future population activities; studying, on a continuing basis, world trends in annual and periodical population and advising the House and institutions on population activities on such trends to be adopted by Nigeria; oversight of National Identity Data Management Office; oversight of National Identity Card Scheme and annual budget estimates.”

He also assured Nigerians that the Committee “will leave no stone unturned in the discharge of our responsibilities on any matter referred to the Committee by bringing our various competencies to bear in every issue.”
