SON cracks down on substandard products in Borno

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has intensified its efforts to combat the proliferation of substandard products in Borno markets, cracking down on defaulters.

Speaking to Nigerian Tribune in Maiduguri on Monday, the agency’s Borno coordinator, Engr. Muhammed Sani Abubakar, warned defaulters to desist from producing or importing substandard products, citing the harmful effects on consumers and the economy.

According to him, SON collaborates with security services, civil defence, customs, and other regulatory agencies to stop the influx of substandard products from neighboring countries. Citing “We have a synergy with other agencies and takes immediate action when discovering non-compliant products.

“SON has been working tirelessly to ensure manufacturer compliance, supervise products, and conduct sensitization campaigns.”

He explained that despite these efforts, substandard products, particularly food and building materials, remain a significant challenge in the state.

He said to address this issue, SON collaborates with other agencies to determine product standards and has punishment in place for defaulters, including fines and product seizures.

He urged consumers to report substandard products and provided guidance to manufacturers on producing qualitative products.

He noted that compliant products receive certification from SON, and the agency has a manual for producing standard products.

He also warned that those producing or importing substandard products will face punishment, including fines and penalties.

SON collaborates with NAFDAC, Consumer Protection Service to analyze products and has a form for reporting substandard products. The agency is committed to ensuring that products in Borno markets meet the required standards.

Engr. Abubakar mentioned that producing or importing substandard products harms consumers and the economy, urging defaulters to desist from such practices and embrace quality production.

“The agency’s efforts have yielded positive results, with several substandard products seized and destroyed. SON remains committed to its mission of protecting consumers and promoting economic growth.

“We are calling on consumers to support our efforts by reporting substandard products and demanding quality products from manufacturers. By working together, we believe that the prevalence of substandard products in Borno markets can be significantly reduced.

“Our crackdown on substandard products in Borno demonstrates our dedication to ensuring product standardization in the state. With our efforts and consumer support, Borno can look forward to a safer and healthier market” he said.
