•calls on federations’ presidents to show more commitment
The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh has said the ministry will continue to play its supervisory roles to make sure that successes are recorded by the federations, he called on the federations’ presidents to show more commitment to the smooth running of their federations.
The Minister made the remarks during a meeting with sports federations’ presidents and secretaries which was held on Tuesday at the media centre of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
The Minister also called for collaboration between his ministry and sports federations so that Nigeria can perform well at international competitions.
He stated that a situation where the presidents and vice presidents of federations stay outside the country will not bode well for such federations and Nigerian sports in general. He added that there will be periodic review meetings to get feedback from the federations in terms of funds needed to prosecute competitions.
“The ministry will continue to play its advisory roles and we are going to be transparent and communicate more. A situation where the president of a federation lives in the UK and the vice president stays outside the country is not good for our country. We need to show more commitment. Most of the federations’ presidents are not committed they are only there to protect their own interests. They forgot that without Nigeria they won’t be president of any federations. We need the commitment of the leadership of all the federations.
“We will be having periodic review meetings to get feedback from the federations in terms of funds needed to prosecute competitions. We need to reposition this sector to achieve what we want to achieve. We are ready to collaborate with the federations to succeed,” the minister said.
Some of the federations’ presidents who spoke rolled out their achievements and challenges while calling on the minister to look at how they can be properly funded for international competitions.
