Two dead, three injured in Ibeju Lekki gas explosion, Lagos

Two people reportedly died while three others were injured in a gas explosion that occurred in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos State on Tuesday night.

Four shops were completely razed in the fire outbreak that accompanied the gas explosion.

The Ibeju Lekki explosion occurred about a week after many people were injured in another gas explosion in the Ajegunle area of Apapa.

The police in the state confirmed the latest explosion and advised residents of the state to “be safety conscious.”

The Nigerian Tribune reported that the latest explosion occurred at a gas retail shop around the Abule Folly area of Ibeju Lekki.

One of the deceased persons was identified as a customer who had gone to the gas shop to fill his cylinder, while the other one is the younger sister of the shop owner.

The image-maker in charge of the state police command, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the explosion to the Nigerian Tribune.

Hundeyin, a Superintendent of Police, said, “The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Elemoro Division received information about an explosion that occurred in the area.”

He said that upon receipt of the information, the DPO quickly mobilised officers to the scene.

The police image-maker added that “on-the-spot assessment revealed that the explosion caused the deaths of two persons.”

“The injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention, while the remains of the deceased victims have since been deposited at the mortuary for preservation.”

He also stated that “the value of the properties destroyed is still unknown. Firefighters and other sister agencies were on the ground to offer help.”

Also on his verified Twitter handle, the police image-maker said, “It is just a week, and we have recorded another gas explosion at a gas retail shop, this time in Ibeju Lekki.”

Sadly, two people died, three sustained injuries, and four shops were razed.

He advised, “Let us prevent avoidable deaths. Let us avoid avoidable deaths.”
