UK Restricts Dependants to PhD Students Only, Says Envoy

Dr. Richard Montgomery clarified that only international students enrolled in PhD programs can bring dependants into the United Kingdom
Montgomery stated the recent policy change aims to address the strain on universities caused by the influx of dependants

The United Kingdom (UK) has clarified that only international students enrolling in Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs can bring dependants into the country.
Dr. Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, revealed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.
Montgomery explained that the recent policy alteration in the educational system, implemented earlier this year, restricts international students in higher education from bringing dependants to the UK. This measure addresses the rising trend of foreign students bringing dependants with them.
According to Montgomery, the substantial increase in dependants was exerting unsustainable pressure on many universities, necessitating the introduction of these changes.
He further noted that discussions regarding the policy adjustment had been ongoing for some time before he was appointed High Commissioner to Nigeria. Additionally, Montgomery acknowledged engaging with universities to ensure the smooth implementation of the new regulations.
