Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has emphasized the need to deploy advanced technology to address the escalating insecurity in his state and the broader Northern region.
During a meeting with Amina J. Mohammed, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, in Washington, United States, Governor Lawal underscored the significance of effectively leveraging advanced technology to combat insecurity.
According to a statement released by the governor’s spokesman, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the meeting was attended by governors from Zamfara, Benue, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, and Niger states.
The Deputy UN Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed, commended the governors for their concerted efforts in seeking lasting solutions to the region’s security challenges.
In his discussion with the Deputy Secretary-General, Governor Lawal outlined the dire security situation in Zamfara and stressed the pivotal role that technology can play in enhancing security measures. He advocated for a coordinated approach to harness technology’s potential, including utilising Artificial Intelligence (AI), biometric identification systems, and surveillance cameras.

Lawal highlighted the crippling effect of insecurity on agriculture, rendering traditional farming practices untenable. He expressed the urgent need for support in transitioning from subsistence farming to modern agricultural practices enabled by technology to combat insurgency effectively.
“We are facing shared challenges, with insecurity being the foremost concern that demands immediate action. The disruption caused by insecurity has severely impacted agriculture. We seek assistance in modernizing our agricultural practices to confront this insurgency effectively,” Governor Lawal stated.
