We won’t allow those pursuing personal interests destroy Ekiti PDP — Chieftain

In what could be described as a direct response to Sunday’s endorsement of Governor Biodun Oyebanji for a second term by former governor Ayodele Fayose, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, Funmilayo Ogun has said the party would soon be rescued from those pursuing their interests.

Ogun, a former commissioner for works and transportation under the administration of Fayose, explained in a statement on Monday in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, that the PDP would survive its current challenges towards reclaiming the state from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2026.

She averred that the party has the followership to dislodge the ruling APC, stating that the PDP won’t allow the personal interests of individuals to override the corporate interests of committed members.

Ogun urged the PDP members and leaders to come together and start planning ahead of the 2026 governorship election, saying the coast is clear considering the abysmal failure of the APC at the national level.

She urged the party members to be resolute and have the stable conviction that she would champion the reclamation battle and become the first female governor in Ekiti and Nigeria.

According to her, “There is a difference between passion for development and personal interest. Some people are only after personal interest and not collective interest. We won’t allow this in the PDP.

“A party that ruled the country for 16 years and at the time produced 30 out of the 36 governors can’t be said to be a pushover or not well mobilised to win a state like Ekiti. We are on course, and we will fulfil this dream.

“I am convinced we are taking over power in 2026. I will be the next governor of Ekiti State and the first female governor in Nigeria. By this day in 2026, we will all be celebrating our swearing-in by God’s grace. We just need to come together as a party and tell ourselves we can do it. But this can only be realised in unison.”

She regretted that some unnamed leaders who benefited greatly from the PDP had abandoned the party and were no longer concerned about its survival and return to its winning streak.

“The young generation of PDP should believe that they can sit on the table and eat, rather than depending on the crumbs falling off the tables of leaders that were already seated.

“This party belongs to all of us. It is no longer going to be business as usual. The party will now be handed over to committed leaders and not merchants,” the party chieftain said.
