Endocrinologists alert to rise in cases of diabetes, foot ulcers, limb amputations in Nigeria

Endocrinologists under the aegis of Endocrine and Metabolism Society of Nigeria (EMSON) have warned that the burden of diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes is a significant public health concern, the prevalence of which is predicted to continue to rise in Nigeria except urgent steps are taken to stem the tide.Amputation rates due to diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) in Nigeria are high. Every 20 to 30 seconds a limb is lost to diabetes mellitus foot syndrome and the lifetime risk of developing a diabetic foot ulcer is 19 – 34 per cent.
